Which mini excavator size do you need?

Size classes

Mini excavators are sized by operating weight. Dig depth below is typical for that weight. Confirm both with the rental shop.

  • Under about 2 tons (about 4,000 lb). Fits a gate, a home lot, or an indoor slab. Typical dig depth is about 6 to 8 feet.
  • About 2 to 4 tons. The common size for footings and a utility trench. Typical dig depth is about 8 to 11 feet.
  • About 4 to 6 tons. More reach and a deeper trench. It needs room to swing and a heavier trailer. Typical dig depth is about 11 to 13 feet.

Tracks and tail swing

Rental minis ride on tracks. Tracks dig and travel in dirt. They can scar pavement, so ask about mats if the machine has to cross concrete.

A zero-tail machine swings inside the width of the tracks. A conventional tail needs open ground behind it. A narrow gate favors the smaller weight class and a short tail.

What to ask the rental shop

  • Operating weight, dig depth, bucket width, and tail swing.
  • Delivery. Country Equipment Rentals and GBU Rentals do not print a delivery price on these machines.
  • Damage waiver, fuel, and whether a thumb or breaker is extra.
  • Rental period. Country prints weekend, weekly, and monthly rates on its excavator page. GBU's day rate is plus tax, and a longer rental is a quote.
