Which skid steer size do you need?

Size classes

Skid steers are sized by rated operating capacity: the load the machine is rated to lift. These ranges are typical.

  • Small frame: under about 1,750 lb. Narrow enough for a garden gate. Suits landscaping, pallets, and small piles of soil or gravel.
  • Medium frame: about 1,750 to 2,200 lb. The usual rental for a driveway, light grading, and a bucket or forks.
  • Large frame: over about 2,200 lb, often up to about 3,500 lb. Heavier material, a bigger bucket, and attachments that need more hydraulic flow.

Wheels and tracks

Wheels belong on pavement and hard ground. They travel faster. They can tear turf and spin in mud.

Tracks, on a compact track loader, spread the weight. They hold on a slope or soft ground and mark a lawn less. They are slower, and a hard turn on asphalt can chew the surface.

Confirm the rated operating capacity, the width, and wheels or tracks with the rental shop.

What to ask the rental shop

  • Rated operating capacity, width, and wheels or tracks.
  • Delivery. Peak Equipment Rentals prints delivery from $50. Country Equipment Rentals does not print a delivery price on its skid steer rates.
  • Damage waiver: whether it is required, and the price.
  • Fuel: who fills the machine, and how it is billed.
  • Attachments. Peak prices a brush hog at $120 a day and a pavement sweeper at $100 a day, on top of the machine. Country lists a Case TL 100 in 36-inch and 42-inch versions at the same day rate. Ask which bucket or forks are included.
  • Rental period. Peak quotes multi-day work by the job. Country prints weekend, weekly, and monthly rates on its skid steer page.
