Which trailer size do you need?

Trailer rental shopsPrice tableJob estimate

GVWR and tow rating

GVWR is the most the loaded trailer is rated to weigh: the empty trailer plus the cargo. Cargo room is GVWR minus the empty weight. Your vehicle's tow rating has to cover the loaded trailer, not just what you put in it. Hitch, brakes, and tongue weight count. The lower limit is the one that matters.

Typical bands: a light utility trailer is often 2,000 to 3,500 lb GVWR. A landscape dump or car hauler is often 7,000 to 10,000 lb GVWR. Heavier dump and equipment trailers are often 14,000 to 16,000 lb GVWR and need a truck rated for that loaded weight, plus trailer brakes.

A dump trailer carries soil, gravel, or junk. An equipment or tilt trailer carries a machine. An enclosed trailer or car hauler covers the load. A water trailer hauls water.

Local listings that print a GVWR include 7k, 10K, 14K, 16K, and 15,432 lb. Confirm the empty weight and your tow rating with the rental shop.

What to ask the rental shop

  • GVWR, empty weight, deck size, and whether your truck's tow rating covers the loaded trailer.
  • Delivery. Peak Equipment Rentals prints delivery from $50. Dynamo prints free delivery within 10 miles of Boise and $3 a mile after that. Country Equipment Rentals does not print a delivery fee. IdaRent does not deliver.
  • Hitch. IdaRent requires a 2-5/16 inch ball. Ask the other rental shops for ball size, brakes, and lights.
  • Damage waiver, and how a hydraulic dump is powered.
  • Rental period. Country prints a weekend rate on its dump and water trailers. Dynamo prints 4-hour, 8-hour, and 12-hour prices, and $100 a day after 3 days, next to a $120 day rate.
