How long to rent
Planning guidance. A short trench on easy ground can fit in a day. Hauling the dirt away, or a long footing, takes longer.
What to rent
Mini excavator
It digs the trench or the footing. A shovel is the wrong tool once the run is long or the hole is deep.
Ask for dig depth, how wide the machine is, and whether the back swings past the tracks. A tight gate needs a smaller machine. The size guide lists typical classes.

Dump trailer
It hauls the spoil away. If the dirt stays on the property, you can skip it. The range on this page includes the trailer.
Some starting prices cover more than dump trailers. Ask which trailer the price is for, the weight rating, and the hitch. Your vehicle has to be rated for the loaded trailer.
